Chinese wedding traditions: 3. Tea ceremony

Posted by

The tea ceremony is an important ritual at a Chinese wedding, it is the most emotional and touching moment on the wedding day.
After the gate crash game, before the groom takes the bride away, he will offer a cup of tea to all the bride’s families who attend the ceremony and say goodbye to them.

In Chinese culture, after getting married, two families become one single family, the groom and bride will address both parents “dad” and “mum”. And the change happens at this very touching tea ceremony.

b. The groom carries the bride to the car
Like many other cultures, the groom carries the bride to the new home over the threshold. One reason for this can trace back to Roman times, there is a saying that this is to avoid the bride brings in the evil spirit from the ground.

  1. The tea ceremony is the most significant tradition of a Chinese wedding . It is where the bride and groom pay respect and show gratitude towards their family, who in turn blesses the newly weds as they start their life as husband and wife.

    1. My American son is marrying “Ling Ling” next weekend. We’re thrilled! Your explanation of the ceremony is very helpful but I have a question. We have four beautiful red envelopes to give gifts during the tea ceremony. I understand it’s important to use 8s and 9s for luck and longevity, but how much money am I expected to put in the envelopes. I’m not a wealthy man… Can’t put $88.88 in each envelope.!

      1. Hey Bill, during tea ceremony, normal families give 1200, 1000 Chinese yuan, you can also give 999, 888 etc to the couple, so you need 2 such red envelopes.
